Women in Engineering Day 2024

by | Jun 26, 2024

J.V Tierney proudly supports and encourages diversity, gender equality, and female representation in the workplace. To celebrate Women in Engineering Day 2024, we caught up with Paula, one of our female engineers, to discuss her experience in the male-dominated engineering industry.

In school Paula was drawn to science and maths and the mechanics of how things work, and this led her to a career in engineering. Paula’s favourite part of her job is that every day is different, and that she gets to work with different people on interesting projects. While we are seeing a trend in the construction industry whereby women are stepping into previously male-dominated roles and leading the charge towards a more gender-balanced future, there is still room for improvement. On this, Paula says that “imposter syndrome can be a challenge when you are the only woman in a room full of men.”

In order to progress the industry to new heights and inspire a future generation of engineers, a gender balanced workforce is essential. Paula’s advice to the younger generation of women is that “Engineering is for everyone. Don’t let the gender imbalance put you off!” With more women like Paula entering the field of engineering each year, we are on the path towards a more fair, balanced, and sustainable future.
