The Rock Wing is a new nine-storey building at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. It includes 98 new beds and associated ancillary accommodation, including rooms such as nurse bases, pantries, clean and dirty utilities, etc. Level 03 includes 16 new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds with Level 06 home to 20 new High Dependency Unit (HDU) bedrooms. It will also be the new home for the National Isolation Unit (NIU), which was also designed by JV Tierney & Co.. The overall building has an approximate area of 11,000m².

Services provided by JV Tierney include:

  • Rapid Building Design and Construction.
  • 16 Nr. PPVL ICU Rooms and 20 Nr. HDU Rooms with 8 NPVL Rooms.
  • Off-site prefabrication of plant rooms and vertical distribution risers.
  • IES Virtual Environment (IES VE) software used to analyse calculated heat flows, air flows, solar radiation, plant performance, internal gains, psychometrics, and thermal interaction between internal spaces.
  • UPS & IPS for Clinical Risk Grade A electrical services supply and distribution.
  • N+1 redundancy on Electrical and ICT supplies.
  • Daylight Harvesting.
  • Intelligent LED Lighting Design.
  • High-Levels of Fabric Performance, exceeding backstop values set out in Part L of the Building Regulations.
  • Automatic purging of water supplies at sanitary wash hand basins.
  • Medical Gases.
  • Pneumatic Tube Conveyance System.
  • Oxygen Enrichment Monitoring System in naturally ventilated bedrooms.
  • Increased ventilation rates in mechanically ventilated bedrooms to dilute excessive build-up of oxygen.
  • Intelligent Fire/Smoke Damper Control System.
  • Comprehensive and enhanced Fire Alarm Cause & Effect.
  • Low specific fan power for mechanical ventilation systems.
  • Multiple phased handovers.
  • Primary Mechanical & Electrical Infrastructure in place for future National Infectious Disease Unit that is currently progressing on site.
