ACEI Design Excellence Award – M&E Large Project Category Winner 2017, LAMA Awards – Best Educational Building Award Winner 2016, Irish Building & Design Awards – Shortlisted in Architectural Project of the Year, Fitout Project of the Year, and School Building of the Year 2016.

The new 8,000m² Eolas Building at NUI Maynooth is dedicated to the quest, discovery and application of knowledge in the ICT disciplines.  The building is clad in perforated metal filigree to simulate 20th century data processing ‘punch cards’. It provides increased, purpose-built space for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research and serves as a place for communal thinking, networking, sharing and mentoring.  The Eolas Building is home to the following faculties:

  • Department of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering – the new building links with the existing Biosciences and Electronic Engineering building through a new enclosed bridge at the second floor level.
  • 3 of the University’s world-renowned Research Institutes – the Hamilton Institute, the Innovation Value Institute (IVI), and the Callan Institute.
  • Maynooth Works – Business Incubation Centre
  • IT Services

The building includes 14 No. ‘hot desks’, 2 No. bio wet labs, high tech conference rooms and classrooms, laboratories, and informal conversation spaces. This facility allowed student numbers in the Departments of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering to grow from 400 to 600 students, and provides capacity for 575 University Staff members.

JV Tierney & Co. provided the M&E & Sustainability Design Services for the project, including:

  • IES Thermal Model of the Building to determine heating and cooling loads, thermal comfort study including the achievement of detailed ventilation parameters, natural daylight study, and predicted BER.
  • Natural Ventilation Strategy in all spaces where possible.
  • High-Efficiency Plant.
  • Building Energy Management System.
  • DALI Lighting Control System with presence, absence, and daylight harvesting controls which minimises the building lighting energy consumption.
  • Thermal mass cooling by use of night ventilation.
  • LED Lighting Installation throughout.
  • Eolas Building achieved a B1 BER Rating.
